Course title: Outpatient Administration of Ketamine for Psychiatric Disorders

Course description: Designed for psychiatrists and advanced practice providers, this one-day course will teach students how to safely administer ketamine infusions for the treatment of psychiatric disorders, as well as observe treatments on live patients.  Upon arrival students will receive lecture slides, sample ketamine consent forms, written standard operating procedure, ketamine protocol and a list of the necessary supplies required for this procedure.  Upon completion students will have the knowledge base and comfort required to integrate this treatment into an outpatient practice.  The class size is limited to 10 students.

Course presenter: Cuyler Goodwin, DO, MPH.  Dr. Goodwin is a UCSF-trained psychiatrist who pioneered this treatment in Sonoma County, and is the Medical Director of Sequoia Mind Health

Course objectives:

  • Understanding of ketamine’s history and uses
  • Understanding of the evidence for ketamine’s use in the treatment of psychiatric disorders
  • Understanding of the various routes of administration of ketamine, as well as pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics
  • Understanding of ketamine’s safety profile, side-effects at various doses, monitoring of side-effects and management of side-effects
  • Understanding of the patient’s experience during the treatment
  • Understanding of the monitoring of patient psychiatric symptoms after and between treatments
  • Understanding of ketamine’s potential for abuse
  • Understanding of proper pre-treatment medical screening for ketamine
  • Understanding of and compliance with regulatory issues related to the administration of ketamine for psychiatric disorders
  • Understanding of a detailed protocol for administering ketamine for psychiatric disorders (this will be provided to you for use in your practice)
  • Understanding of the informed consent process for ketamine (sample informed consent documents will be provided to you for use in your practice)
  • Understanding of proper procedure for possession and storage of ketamine
  • Understanding of the business of ketamine for psychiatric disorders


Physicians (MD/DO) and advanced practice providers (NP/PA). You will be required to fax a copy of your license and diploma at the time of registration

The course is one full day, from 8am-5pm, on either a Saturday or a Sunday
The full-day courses are held on a Saturday or a Sunday in beautiful Santa Rosa, CA at the offices of Sequoia Mind Health
Sonoma County has lodging options in all categories and price ranges, from economical to high-end. The Flamingo Hotel is reasonably priced and is within walking distance (about 10 minutes) from the training site
Sonoma County’s wine country is an international destination with many fine restaurants, wineries, breweries and hotels. There are ample outdoor activities, as well, including hiking and visiting the rugged Sonoma Coast
Registration covers breakfast and lunch, the lecture, course materials and the treatment of live patients for demonstration purposes. Registration does not cover travel expenses, lodging or entertainment, and the registrant is responsible for arranging this

Course schedule:

  • 8-9am: coffee and breakfast
  • 9am-12pm: didactics
    • 9-10am: ketamine overview—history, safety, pharmacokinetics and phamarcodynamics
    • 10am-11am: treatment protocol—dosing, routes of administration, side-effects, monitoring of vital signs, recovery
    • 11am-12pm: regulatory issues, the business side of ketamine
  • 12-1pm: lunch provided
  • 1-5pm: practicum—administration of ketamine for depression on three (3) live patients
